The Futaba Aoi (Asarum caulescens) is a sacred plant that symbolizes the connection between gods and humans, and its name originates from the ancient Japanese word “afuhi” (meaning “the day to meet” or “the day to encounter the gods”). It is the crest of the Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto.
Grasshoppers are considered very auspicious insects because their appearance symbolizes “jumping,” “moving forward,” and “leaping forward.” Because they powerfully jump forward without moving backward, they are said to be a sign of good fortune, increased luck in work and challenges, and even the arrival of great opportunities.
Within the dark red at the center, there is a bright red, which is a testament to Mr. Abe’s artistic sensibility, as he is also a painter. It’s difficult to see in this natural light photograph, but it has a very effective meaning.
The reverse side features blue, depicting a completely different world.
By changing the lid, the artwork transforms, becoming almost like a completely different piece.
